Doubt & Uncertainty?

Clinical Methods to Help

Clients Find Greater Freedom From Anxiety

Anxiety-based disorders are related to difficulty tolerating uncertainty and live on avoidance or  compulsions. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is unique among therapeutic approaches in  providing skills for accepting doubt and uncertainty, as well as motivation for completing the exposures  necessary for the client with anxiety to discontinue avoidance behaviors or rituals, and build a  meaningful life.

ACT for Anxiety-Based Disorders

I Overview of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

  1. Goal of ACT: To create a rich, full, meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably comes with it.

  2. Based on Relational Frame Theory (RFT), developed by Steven Hayes at University of Nevada and further developed by Dermot Barnes-Holmes at Ghent University

  3. In RFT, psychopathology is related to Experiential Avoidance based on mental frames formed in childhood; ACT is a behavioral theory but is concerned with human language, especially the use of metaphor and analogy

  4. How ACT differs from other approaches

II Six Pillars of ACT

  1. Definitions and explanations for Acceptance, Self as Context, Defusion, Contact w/Present Moment, Values & Committed Action

  2. How to impart the six pillars to clients

III Case Examples with Anxiety-Based Disorders

  1. OCD

  2. Eating Disorder

  3. Panic Disorder

IV Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to articulate the goal of ACT.

  2. Participants will be able to list and define the six pillars of ACT.

  3. Participants will be able to give examples of techniques to teach clients each of the six principles of ACT.

  4. Participants will be able to outline the difference between ACT and approaches such as CBT
