Max Rorty, LCSW, presents on

"Transgender Affirming Practices for Therapists".

   11:30 - 1:30 pm via Zoom

This presentation assumes the inherent worth and legitimacy of all trans and nonbinary people and focuses on eliminating structural barriers to their thriving. Common barriers trans and non-binary people encounter when accessing therapy include:

  • Little to no trans-specific content in clinical education programs; LGB is not T!
  • Demographic intake forms or intake session questions that make binary, cisgender or heterosexist assumptions, or overlook vital aspects of self.
  • Gender affirming surgery letter writing policies that obstruct medical care.
  • Restrooms that presume binary identity.
  • Provider anxiety about offending trans and nonbinary people.

This training will present three patient vignettes including trans and nonbinary youth, examples of intake forms, surgery letters, and bathroom signs that affirm all identities, and apology practices that center patients.

  1. Attendees will be able to introduce themselves using their pronouns and inquire after other people’s pronouns.
  2. Attendees will be able to apologize for their mistakes graciously while maintaining the clinical focus on their patients.
  3. Attendees will be able to use correct patient centered terminology with patients and colleagues.
