Vicky Stevens, PhD. presents on

The Importance of Expressive Arts in the Treatment of Trauma.

11:30 - 1:00 pm via Zoom

When addressing the problem of traumatized people who, in a myriad of ways, continue to react to current experience as a replay of the past, there is a need for therapeutic methods that do not depend exclusively on drugs, talk therapy, cognitive insight or cognitive understanding. We have learned that most experience is automatically processed on a subcortical level of the brain, i.e., by the unconscious – in interpretations that take place outside of conscious awareness. Insight and good intentions have only a limited influence on the operation of subcortical processes, but synchrony, movement, and reparative relational experiences do.” Center for Trauma Research, Bessel Van der Kolk

Often highly trained and skilled therapists do not have training in the modalities of the expressive and visual arts such that they feel comfortable integrating techniques into the work of healing trauma.

This session will provide an introduction to the importance of reading and expressing through non-verbal communication, why the arts are especially important for working with those who suffer from trauma, how to differentiate between trauma-informed arts interventions from art therapy or being an artist, and how to think about integrating the arts with an eye toward holistic and interdisciplinary treatment of the whole person. This will apply to individual therapy as well as groups in various settings.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will learn 3 findings from current research that support the importance of the arts within the context of all therapeutic modalities as part of healing trauma and in the service of somatic, emotional and cognitive integration.
  • Participants will learn 5 ways to read nonverbal communication in order to facilitate integration, self-regulation, and increases self-awareness and agency in clients.
  • Participants will access their own creativity and learn 3 techniques from the expressive arts that can be integrated into their own therapeutic approach.
