"T Comes Before LGB: Clinical Care for Transgender and Gender Queer Clients"
Many transgender or gender queer people experience life events that would be best processed through supportive therapy. However, finding a supportive therapist can be difficult for people who have a history of difficult interactions with healthcare professionals. This is particularly true of transgender people, who self-report negative experiences with healthcare providers at a much higher rate than their cisgender (non-transgender) peers.
This presentation is designed to support therapists and counselors who are uncertain about how to interact with potential transgender or gender queer clients. The goal of the presentation is to reduce therapist anxiety and increase therapist flexibility by familiarizing care providers with appropriate terminology, demographic collection practices, and techniques for developing rapport with transgender or gender queer clients. The training will begin with an overview of the differences between sex, gender and gender presentation. Terminology will be clarified, including trans man, trans woman, gender queer, gender non-conforming, personal pronoun preference and more. The importance of asking questions and apologizing for misrecognition and mistakes will be discussed, and the presentation will demonstrate how to craft an effective apology that promotes the development of client-therapist rapport.
